I'm glad to get this comment, because it helps me to clarify my general position with regard to entertainment: I think it is way too simplified to simply condemn the entertainment industry wholesale. My goal is to get people to think about what they take for granted, for example, to begin to evaluate how different sorts of entertainment align (or do not align) with their values. This is precisely what you are saying, so I couldn't agree with you more.

With regard to shadow values, we couldn't live without them, our way of life would collapse. So I'm not necessarily saying they are bad, I'm saying there's a sort of conflict between what we claim to value and what we act like we value. Although I think there is much to criticize about our way of life, there is also much to praise. The hope is just to promote reflection, and over the long run some sort of progress.

Thanks for commenting.

So if these shadow values were exposed and gotten rid of, would the entertainment industry falter and begin failing, or would they have to adopt new tactics?

I like entertainment, and after reading some of your ideas, I would like to think that the goal of more healthy (less addictive, detracting, and consuming; independent of personal beliefs) entertainment is wholly possible.
